Why Most Writing Advice is BS

Have you ever read advice that made you feel less-than? Maybe it was something along the lines of “If you want to succeed, you must write every day.” Or “you must write at the same time every day”. Or “you must have a daily word count.” Or “you must write to market.”

Whatever it was, this piece of advice hit you like you’d been slapped with a 2×4. Ohhh. That’s why I’m not successful.

Maybe you tried out this “How to be a successful writer” tip. Maybe it worked for you. But chances are, it didn’t.

And that’s why most writing advice is BS. A successful writing process is highly personal. But that doesn’t sell books and courses. So few people say it.

Here’s the only piece of writing advice that’s universally true, and it doesn’t matter what kind of writing you do: find what works for you.

And if you can’t write every day, that doesn’t make you any less of a writer. No matter how many people scream otherwise.
